Fastened Joint Classification System

Purpose:

The following fastened joint classification system was developed to provide users with characteristics of common solar PV fastened joint configurations. The characteristics provided by the classification system include a 3-D image and a list of common physical characteristics for each joint type.  The fastened joint classification system is intended to also provide industry stakeholders with a common language by which to describe fastened joints used in solar PV racking and module mounting systems.

A common classification system is important to facilitate the identification of fastened joint characteristics and for properly identifying joint types found during field inspections. Designers can use the classification system to understand the general strength and performance characteristics of each prototypical joint type.

The classification system covers common fastened joint configurations for module mounting and racking frame assemblies. The system covers common fastened joints found in both fixed racking and tracker systems.

Please note drawings are not representative of any manufacturer and the drawing files use prototypical dimensions.

Instructions:

  1. Each row represents one fastened joint type with example specifications found for each.
  2. Each image can be downloaded and viewed as a PDF.  See links to images in column C.
  3. Common drawing file formats are available for each fastened joint image and can be requested by sending an email to Gerald Robinson, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - gtrobinson@lbl.gov

This is a living document and will be updated with new joint types and engineering application details. For any additional information or to request a fastened joint be added to the library, please contact Gerald Robinson.
